Record Breaking

Queens Of Africa broke the mound, created the platform on which a lot of other sellers embarked. We were one of the few that actually designed and produced our dolls rather than dress generic dolls, brand them and market them. We drew attention to the fact that black dolls were not getting the attention and prominence it required. How it can psychologically affect self worth and standard of beauty. We pioneered “doll with a purpose” beyond the glitz, glam and fashion.

The Need

The Queens of Africa project is a Girl child empowerment program with the goal and aim of inculcating in the African/Nigerian Girl child positive attributes and interest through play using fun and entertaining ways.
The Queens of Africa characters are designed to represent progressive qualities such as endurance, peace and love while developing literary potentials in our children as well as enhancing their career development for future.

The Cause

Take a pause and imagine……….
A typical African child is told ‘black is beautiful’ but when she becomes an adult, does she really think so? Girls have been handed white dolls for many years that has apparently exposed them to a lot of false sense of beauty and acceptance., which could lead to low self esteem and cultural values , which could leads to lack of appreciation of their colour and culture.
A Washington psychologist, Nsenga Warfield-Coppock, said the Hofstra research, ”simply proves that black children, like any other children, adopt the standards set by the media.” Those standards, she said, are predominantly white. She added that since most toy commercials show white children playing with white dolls, it is not surprising that black children choose them.

The Aim

To promote a sense of pride and confidence as a people.
To promote morality in the African/Nigeria child.
To help encourage our children to be focus in life.
To imbibe the virtues of love, peace and endurance.
Enable our children cultivate early literary abilities.
To demonstrate that sound education holds a key to all we do in life.
To awaken creative talents in our children.
Encourage optimal development.

To also increase the amount of Girls/Women that are contributing members of society by showing the effect and benefit of education in line with goals 2 & 3 of the MDGs objective

The 4 arms of Queens of Africa

Dolls – serves as an object of affection Nigerian/African girls can identify with. The dolls are fashionable in both western and traditional wears. Their hair style is in a bit of both cultures for a start and will later lean more towards our African styles.
Books/Comics – serves as medium to instill importance of education, culture, history, social and environmental issues that can help and add values to the lives of children.
Music – Songs with clean, educative and encouraging lyrics an alternative to most popular songs meant for adult audience listened to by children. Produced by some of the best names in the industry, home and abroad. The songs will be backed with high quality 3D animation musical videos.
Animation – An exciting series that takes its audience into fun world of Queens of Africa as they go on different adventures. There is a lot to be learnt on these diverse adventures, dealing with Global and environmental issues, international issues and even going back in time enable children learn from history. They use their special powers of mind control in areas of Love, peace and endurance, help people around the World.

The drive – Strategies

Despite the importance of formal education, there has been a virtual
deprivation of education for the girl child in Nigeria.
Dropping out of school to help provide for the family through
hawking of goods, lack of the necessary infrastructure and
outright poverty are some of the reasons that have affected female education.

The queens of Africa’s goal of empowerment is hopped to be achieved via music, comics, and animation TV series along with the dolls, importance of education and encouraging aspiration amongst girls in Nigeria/Africa

Embark on a FACT CAMPAIGN. Which basically is to bring to light the problems facing our girl children (one liners) in Nigeria/Africa, through TV ads , Radio sds , Bill boards, Print media etc. We plan to partner with NGOs by using the Q of A name create awareness on their challenges, and organize events as a means to raise funds for their needs etc

Factors that can improve impact

Funding – Adequate funding is required. The project is being run almost at cost as gaining acceptance is the major priority, so the underline message is not lost.
Purchases – We are yet to gain full/general acceptance. We need people to buy more of our dolls. Other streams of income include advert placement in our comics, or sponsorship of our books, comics, music CDs and animation series.
Partnership – Involvement of both individual and corporate bodies who are willing to give back to the society will go a long way to further achieve the goals of this project. Due to the positive long lasting impact on it’s target and Nigeria as a whole.
Recognition – Various Ministries of Foreign affairs, Arts and Culture, could also lend a helping hand in supporting our efforts in promoting our culture and values.
Export – We get a lot of Africans abroad who appreciate our dolls, but high cost of shipment out ways their interest. Stockiest seems to be the solution for now.

Benefits – Children

With the introduction of the Q of A project there has been noticeable impact amongst some children in the following areas.
A better appreciation of Nigeria and her culture in this age of heavy western influence.
Moral and ethical values are heightened.
Documentation and introduction of History in a fun lasting manner of Queens and notable women of old in Nigeria/Africa.
Alternative entertaining music with clean encouraging lyrics.
